THE CHARACTERS OF THE SERIES

Chariklia Birbili (Markos Seferlis)

Chariklia Birbili lives in an old detached house in Ampelokipi. She is a mother of 5 children. All her children are adults, but for her they will always be 5 years old. Chariklia loves them and is overprotective of them, having raised them alone since her husband Vasilios (Billy) Birbilis, made her a widow at a very young age. Her late husband, however, left her an “amanati”, his father, Charilaos Birbilis, whom Chariclea lovingly takes care of, but she does not stop having a love-hate relationship with him, which manifests itself in teasing
one another, which always has hilarious results. Hariklia is a very interesting personality, spontaneous,
with a very developed sense of humor, even in the most difficult situations. Many times she becomes cynical, saying whatever comes to mind,
which results in difficult positions for her children, especially her only daughter, Zeta. But she has a heart of gold. She loves
her family and friends very much. She is always by their side ready to help them – whether they want it or not – always doing what she thinks is best for them, even if it sometimes brings disaster. She is full of prejudices, while religion plays an important role in her life.
She likes to drink beer at the neighborhood pub “Drunkula”, and her hobby is to stick her nose everywhere, even in things that don’t concern her, as a result many times – either by mistake or by accident – she causes unpredictable and very fun situations.

Thanos Birbilis (Dimitris Starovas)

Chariklia’s son who creates the most problems

in the family and constantly worries his mother. He is not a big fan of honest and legal work and as a result

he gets involved in various scams and petty thefts, being led

by his childhood friend Jimis Angelou, with whom they do everything together.

From desks next to each other at school, to cells next to each other in prison. Now, he is forced to work in a product promotion company,

where part of his job is to walk the streets

wearing big, funny and weird costumes (penguin, cigarette butt, mouse, turkey, kangaroo, even a Ken doll).

He is engaged to Maria Tsalapataura.

Charilaos Birbilis (John Captain)

Also known as “Grandpa”. He is the father of the late Vasilios and father-in-law of Chariklia. Grandpa has long white hair,

he is advanced in age and therefore has an obsession

with death. He is holding up very well for his age, though

although he has a slight loss of hearing and memory, which usually appear whenever it suits him. He does very well with his grandchildren,

while he has a big feud with Chariklia. Despite their enmity, however,

Chariklia and Grandpa show real interest

for each other, even though they hide it very well.

He spends most of the day half asleep

in his armchair and when he is awake, he constantly grumbles, which infuriates Chariclea, who never misses an opportunity to “take revenge” on him.

Zeta Birbili (Elena Tsavalia)

Chariklia’s only daughter. In the mornings she gives private lessons in French Literature away from home, while in the afternoons she attends Psychology seminars. She is a very sweet person, very kind

and giving towards the other members of her family

and her friends, but she has absolutely no luck with men.

She has already had a failed civil marriage and – now free – is looking for the ideal man to rebuild her life.

All her choices, however, pass through her mother’s microscope,

who always finds something negative to them.

This way she sabotages her dates and makes her cry all the time.

Stathis Birbilis (Kostas Sommer)

One of Chariklia’s 4 sons. He lives with his wife Betty

and their eight-year-old son Billy in their house, in Ilisia.

He is a carpenter. Stathis is the quietest of all, a little naive,

resulting in his wife doing whatever she wants with him.

He represents the stability and calm within this

absoloutely crazy family.

Maria Tsalapatoura-Birbili (Tania Trypi)

Thanos’ fiancee. She is very beautiful, intelligent, honest, loving and responsible, which comes to balance

the bad influence Jimis has on Thanos. Maria comes from a wealthy family. Her father, Fokion, is a great lawyer

with studies and a brilliant career in London, before coming back to Greece.

Maria and Thanos live with Chariclea, until they find their own house, since they refuse to accept any financial help from Maria’s wealthy family. After all, Maria – even though she is

rich – she works as a nurse in a public hospital, while also spending her evenings in the “Drunkula” pub with Hariklia, Mina, Zeta and Betty.

Tzimis Angelou (Stavros Nikolaidis)

He is Thanos’ best friend, while Thanos is his best and only friend. He is a petty crook with a long criminal record. He is almost never separated from his clothes, composed

of a Jockey hat, which he almost always wears backwards,

a jacket, overalls and white sneakers. The jacket

and Jimmy’s pants have anti-theft pins on them, which means

that they are stolen. Sometimes he also wears uniforms, similar

with those of Thanos, in order to help him with some of his work.
Jimis often looks for illegal ways to make money

or gain something for himself by implicating Thanos as an accomplice.

Chariclea dislikes him very much, because she considers him a bad influence

for her son, although she sometimes treats him affectionately. Tzimis likes Hariklia a lot and ignores her own dislike

to his person. Often, he says stupid or annoying things, without

thinking about how others will react. However, in several cases he appears particularly cunning.

Mina Bouboukis (Areti Zachariadou)

She is Chariklia’s best friend and neighbor of many years. She considers Chariklia’s house her own, since she keeps going in and out of the back door of the kitchen to drink coffee with her

and discuss their family matters. Usually, the conversation continues at the Drunkula pub – where they are regulars –

drinking their beer and having fun with the other women

of the Birbilis family. He is always next to Chariklia,

but also Chariklia cares a lot for her, from the first moment

that they met. She is a very nice person and is constantly the victim of her best friend’s teasing. She’s married

to Sophronis, who is constantly ill, and they have a daughter, Suzi.

Betty (Christiana Karnezi)

Wife of Stathi and mother of Billy. She has a love-hate relationship

with her mother-in-law, who likes her, but doesn’t hesitate – when she thinks her son is offended – to lash out at her.

Betty is very intelligent, with a dynamic character, takes initiative and is not afraid to put Hariklia in her place when she feels

that the circumstances require it! She spends her evenings at the “Drunkula” pub with Zeta, Maria, Hariklia and Mina.

Teo Birbilis (Georgis Kontopodis)

Son of Chariclea. He’s gay, which everyone knows

and accepts except his mother, who ignores it. Teo is in a relationship with fellow hairdresser Terry Lou, with whom he works together at the hair salon “O Psalidocheris”. He is sensitive

with an artistic nature and has only one complaint from his mother: that she never gave him the importance he would have wanted, so that he could

talk to her about himself.

Papa-Lambros (Pericles Albanis)

He is the priest of the parish of Agia Triada. Often, he visits

his parishioners and especially Chariklia, under the pretext of “spreading

the Word of God”, but in essence he wants to “oil” his gut, since Chariclea always treats him to something delicious out of kindness.

Steve Birbilis (Leonidas Iordanos)

He is the youngest son of Chariklia and the nicest child in the family. He is a member of the independent medical and humanitarian organization “Doctors Without Borders” and most of the time he is away from Greece, offering his services to Third World countries,

which means that he rarely shows up at his house.

He is very calm and sensitive. When he was very young, he had sent a letter to Santa Claus and asked him to give his own presents to another boy who was poor and had no other toys.

Terry Lou (Marios Glykas)

By world Lefteris Loustrokamilopardalakis. Hairdresser and Teo’s colleague at the “O Psalidocheris” hair salon. Before becoming a hairdresser, he was a chef. Terry is having an affair with Theo, something that Chariclea –

who doesn’t like him because she considers him her son’s rival

of the store management position at the hair salon – doesn’t know.
